Special Topic #3
Movement Science in Asana
Biomechanics, Anatomy, and Systems of Balance in Yoga
with Tiffany Denny, PT, DPT, C-IAYT, E-RYT500, YACEP
This 12-month course bridges the worlds of modern movement science and traditional yoga, offering a practical, embodied approach to anatomy and biomechanics within asana. Guided by Tiffany Denny’s expertise in physical therapy and yoga therapy, you'll explore how your body moves, adapts, and thrives in response to the unique demands of your yoga practice.
Through experiential learning and personal inquiry, we’ll examine the science behind stretching and strengthening—discovering how tendons, bones, muscles, and fascia respond to the loads we place on them. You’ll gain a foundational understanding of biomechanical principles and muscle contraction types that will empower you to make intelligent, progressive choices in your practice.
This course is not about memorizing endless muscle names (unless you’re into that kind of thing); it’s about cultivating informed, adaptable movement practices that support your body’s longevity and vitality. You’ll learn how to apply anatomy functionally—not just theoretically—and leave with tools that enhance both safety and creativity on the mat.
Whether you’re a yoga teacher looking to deepen your anatomical fluency or a dedicated practitioner curious about the ‘why’ behind your movement, this course offers both insight and integration. Join us to explore where science meets somatic wisdom—and walk away with knowledge that moves with you, both on and off the mat.
-
Movement Foundations - contraction types + kinetic chains + range of motion
Systems of Balance - Visual + Vestibular + Proprioception
Biomechanical Principles - Stretching and loading + Tissue adaptation
Lower extremity anatomy and biomechanics
Upper extremity anatomy and biomechanics
Spine and core anatomy and biomechanics
-
No required books. Yoga and Biomechanics by Jules Mitchell is recommended if you are particularly interested in this topic and want to delve more deeply into the science.
Everyone will receive access to Tiffany’s short YouTube series on Movement Foundations

Students of all levels participate and benefit in this training program. Asana classes are meant to be informative and educational to help develop a solid understanding of the anatomy of the asana, not to unnecessarily challenge you. You do not have to do every pose offered or be a “super-fancy” yoga practitioner. However, a sense of humor, the capacity to challenge and respect your limits, and good communication skills are helpful.
-
The tuition for 300-hour program is $4,260 to be paid in 12 monthly installments.
If you choose to drop out of the program, the tuition you have paid is non-refundable, but you will not be charged for the portion you do not complete. You will be given a week to download the materials from the weekends you purchased.
